In & Out of Place explores personal landscapes of the mind using the medium of screenprinting. Suited to Shelagh’s method of working which by her definition is about the process, and the build up of layers upon layers. Within these layers stories can be woven, stories about personal identity and connectedness, and ponder on the recurring motifs that are selected from her database of imagery about ‘place’. The urban and natural environments, which she inhabits, feeds her process, the use of colour reflects the abundance of the seeing, the experience, the felt force within these environments.
Born in Scotland in 1959 her early studies were of Social Psychology and later Communication at Napier University Edinburgh. She gained her professional membership of Visual Arts Scotland [VAS] in 2008.
Most recently Shelagh Atkinson was selected for the prestigious Kunming China International Print exhibition  Also in 2012 she was published in the 35th edition Whos who in Art Morven Press. She has exhibited extensively nationally and internationally including a solo exhibition at the Scottish Russia Institute , Thoroughly Modern Women at the Scottish National Portrait Gallery , Women in Contemporary Printmaking Sofia Bulgaria  and the Kanagawa Print Triennial Japan  She has created a number of commissioned portrait pieces [Sally Beamish and Simon McBurney] to name a few.
