GALLERY ASSISTANT

JOB DESCRIPTION: 

Hours: 21 Part-time Permanent, flexible hours, Tuesday - Saturday 

Salary: £24,960 - £29,120 per annum pro rota

The gallery is looking for an experienced Gallery Assistant to join a small team and assist the director in various aspects of running of the gallery. The role is wide ranging and requires someone who can multitask both administratively and practically during the day-to-day operations and exhibition implementation. The candidate must have high attention to detail, be efficient in all aspects of administration, have eloquent written and spoken communication abilities. The role requires a creative approach and willingness to contribute meaningful ideas to support the gallery programme and set up. 


The position requires 21 hours per week during gallery hours, the candidate must be willing to work extra hours when required.


Responsibilities 

  • First point of call for public enquiries – by phone, email and through website platforms 
  • Being a warm, welcoming and well-informed presence for visitors and clients
  • Confidence in introducing exhibitions to the public
  • Managing sales in the gallery and online
  • Assisting with invitations and guest lists 
  • Sorting and sending post 
  • Sourcing quotes, arranging couriers and shipping 
  • Maintaining calendar and gallery schedule 
  • Maintaining gallery supplies and keeping the gallery tidy 
  • Artist and Gallerist liaison on all aspects of exhibition planning
  • Packing and shipping artwork and arranging consignment of works for exhibition 
  • Technical support for exhibition installation and planning
  • Assist at art fairs and events when required
  • Compiling exhibition material including press releases, exhibition plans and prices 
  • PA tasks for the Director 

 

Person Specifications (essential) 

  • Minimum of two years experience of working in a gallery
  • Degree in art history, curating, fine art or similar
  • Highly self-motivated, organised, flexible and reliable  
  • Confidence with proof reading 
  • Experience and confidence of public speaking and gallery tours 
  • Excellent team-working, interpersonal and communication skills 
  • Willingness to work outside regular hours on occasion during exhibition (de)installation and events including evenings and weekends 
  • Curatorial and practical experience with exhibition installation
  • Proficient Mac user 
  • Microsoft Office, Adobe InDesign, Dropbox
  • Designing and sending mail-outs 
  • Maintaining mailing lists and database 
  • Updating gallery website and other platforms 
  • Strategising social media campaigns to promote gallery artists, events and activities.
