Stephan Ehrenhofer is an artist who is taking a minimalist contemporary approach to textiles and painting.
Beyond a continuously strong practice in painting, his primary focus lie in the concrete and systematic aspects of art. Working with textiles, paper, metal, and wood, Ehrenhofer’s restrained textile and mixed media works evoke a quiet precision, reflecting on the intrinsic qualities of materials and the legacy of non-objective art. His pared-back compositions invite close attention to the relationships between surface, texture, and form.
Born in Zürich in 1964, Stephan Ehrenhofer is currently based in Berlin and Southern Burgenland, Austria. Between 1985 and 1989 he studied Fine Arts at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna, completing his training in the final years of the tapestry and weaving masterclass. These formative studies continue to influence the way the artist accesses the traditions of painting and weaving, taking innovative forays into the three-dimensional world of plastic objects up to the scale of installations.
