Frances’ works explore the deconstruction of universally familiar pattern structures. Moving away from three-dimensional forms, entirely encased in pattern, to relief panels. This new body of panels investigate the movement and space created by the deconstruction of pattern structures into more abstract expressions. Frances explains:

“As I make the work I am thinking about change, uncertainty, shifting perspectives, finding ways to accept, embrace, and see the beauty in the unfixing of the familiar. Personal and universal themes.”

Capturing this in such a permanent material as ceramic holds an interesting tension. When developing the work Priest was also thinking about unfixing histories and creating space for new versions of the past to be explored.

The use of tonal shifts in colour adds another layer of movement to the pieces. Created through the painterly use of commercially manufactured vitreous slips over black clay. The black clay has a strong voice in the work, with the iron oxides bleeding through the vitreous slip colours. The mat vitreous slip surfaces replicate sketches in gouache which will also form part of the exhibition.
