Scottish Landscape Awards Selected Artists

Mary Morrison :: James Lumsden

We are delighted to announce that two gallery artists have been accepted for this year's Scottish Landscape Awards.

The 2025 exhibition will be held at the Kirkcudbright Galleries, from 5 July to 28 September 2025. The Scottish Landscape Awards is open to anyone over 16 years born, living or studying in Scotland, and for works in any media. The Award is a biennial event on each occasion moving to a different region and gallery within Scotland.

Mary Morrison and James Lumsden will all have work in this year's exhibition. We have been in touch with the artists to find out more about the selected works.

Marry Morrison, The Space Between I:

Mary Morrison evokes a sense of place through a sensitive use of materials combined with graphic elements.

In this work, delicate washes of paint suggest landscape, layered with annotation from circuit boards akin to abstract musical notation with spaces and pauses. The Japanese concept of ‘Ma’ relates to the space in between, more than empty space it is the essence or intention that is felt in that space, the silence that enhances the beauty and meaning of the surrounding elements.

James Lumsden, Point Series (3/21):

I live and work between Edinburgh and Point on the Isle of Lewis. Although essentially abstract, the paintings in The Point Series allude to landscape and a sense of place which has developed from living on the island.

My primary concern as a painter is the creation of a sense of light and space. I build multiple layers of translucent colour, layer upon layer until a sense of depth and feeling begins to emerge through the process.
