Hanna ten Doornkaat studied BA (sculpture) at Kingston University and MA (sculpture) at Wimbledon School of Art (UAL).

ten Doornkaat’s main medium is the graphite pencil and the building up of layers upon layers of lines. No ‘drawing on board’ is seen as a solitary work or object but always as part of a conversation in space. For her drawing goes beyond the simple depiction of an object, a mark made on paper, it is as much about the process as it is about a metaphysical expression of an idea.

Drawing is characterised by a line that is always unfolding, always becoming the first mark not only structures the blank board that she draws on but also defines it temporally, as the the drawing’s marks follow one another in time.

This description parallels ten Doornkaat’s drawing process in which the mark is in a constant state of flux and transformation. She reveals that ‘the repetitive dense graphic lines’ are a direct response to the continual thread of fleeting moments in the online/social media experience. She explores the interrelationship between movement and mark, and its expansion into spatial formations.
